Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands; thy walls are continually before me.
If we are honest, we sometimes feel the Lord has forgotten us and we are just languishing away in a dead end place. It sometimes seems that life brings us to places where there is seemingly no good answer and no way out. We can sometimes feel like Israel at the Red Sea. Our captors chasing us from behind, an impossible sea to cross in front of us. Mountains and wilderness all around and desperation setting in. In these places we can feel that we have nothing left to give.
Zion was complaining, in Isaiah 49, that the Lord had forgotten her. The Lord did not answer her in anger but out of love said, in so many words, that’s impossible. You are graven upon the palms of my hands! How many times a day do you look at the palms of your hands? Every time the Lord looks at the palms of His hands He sees you.
He also told her, “thy walls are continually before me.”
The same original word translated as walls in this passage of scripture is used in Exodus 14:22, And the children of Israel went into the midst of the sea upon the dry ground: and the waters were a wall unto them on their right hand, and on their left.
When the Lord brings us to a situation, He has already made a way through that situation. We only have to trust and obey. He has placed walls around us that protect us and limit the situation before we ever even reach the situation. Our walls are continually before Him. He would know immediately if the situation was exceeding the bounds He had put around us.
How comforting. I’m engraved upon the palms of His hands and my walls are continually before Him.
