2 Corinthians 10:4
(For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)
Our weapons are not carnal but they are mighty through God.
The original word, translated as mighty in English, means to be able to do something, it means mighty in wealth and influence and it means excelling in something.
In life we are going to have tribulation and trials. We will meet tribulation and trials without and, for sure, we will struggle with tribulation and trials within. It is so easy when we run into this tribulation and these trials to lash out with our tongue at any who we perceive, to be opposing us and hindering our progress. The tongue is a mighty weapon either when used for good or for evil.
In Revelations 19:15 when the Lord returns, He is pictured as having a sharp sword coming out of His mouth. Jesus used this sharp sword of the Word of God when He was tempted in the wilderness. His answer to the Tempter always was, “It is written.”
It is strange to the human mind to think about using spiritual weapons in the battles of life but therein is our answer. “the weapons of our warfare are not carnal”. Strange but true. Our weapons are, “mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds”. A stronghold is a castle, a fortress, an opinion, someone’s wild tale they are telling on me.
Did you ever try to change someone’s political persuasion or religious affiliation? Did you ever try to change someone’s opinion of you or their interpretation of a story that happened to you? It’s like trying to change your own mind and opinion about something. It’s like trying to get Congress to agree on anything and move forward. Our spiritual weapons can pull down all these strongholds.
What is this spiritual weapon? It is the Word of God. When we learn to think in terms of what God’s Word says and when we learn to approach life from a loving relationship of trust with God we will see strongholds in our life being to fall. The fortified castles that have stood in my way for so long will begin to fall. For if God be for us, who can be against us? I perceive we are well able to go up and take the country!
