But let all those that put their trust in thee rejoice: let them ever shout for joy, because thou defendest them: let them also that love thy name be joyful in thee. For thou, LORD, wilt bless the righteous; with favour wilt thou compass him as with a shield.
As human beings we spend all of our life, it seems, seeking approval. We look for approval from our mother before we are even old enough to know what we are doing. As we become a little older we look for approval from our father, siblings and teachers. Then later we look for approval on our jobs and from our spouses. We sometimes even reach out to our children, in later years, for approval from them.
Affirmation is an important ingredient in a well adjusted and happy person’s life. If we live with disapproval it results in an unhappy and miserable soul. If we live with approval and affirmation we are more successful and happy in whatever we do.
The Psalmist discovered that there are two key ingredients to finding approval by God and thereby living a life of joy. Those two ingredients are trust and love. The Psalmist said if someone puts their trust in thee, let them rejoice and if they love thy name let them be joyful.
The Bible then says, “For thou, LORD, wilt bless the righteous; with favour wilt thou compass him as with a shield.” So who is righteous? What makes me righteous? That is a perplexing question because, if I am honest, I can testify that I am a human being and not righteous.
The thing that makes me righteous in God’s eyes, is trusting and loving Him. Two of the most righteous things I can do is simply to trust the LORD and love Him. If I trust and love Him, I am granted His approval. He doesn’t approve of me because I am such a great person or because I have done so many awesome things. His approval comes simply by trusting and loving Him.
He said, “For thou, LORD, wilt bless the righteous; with favour wilt thou compass him as with a shield.” He wraps us in His favour as with a shield when we trust and love Him. He defends, us like a shield, from incoming attacks, by wrapping us in His favour. All because we trust and love Him.
When we don’t understand what is going on and why everything is so out of control, let us simply proclaim to ourselves and to the enemy, “I trust God and love Him no matter what is happening,” and soon we will feel the joy of the LORD and His favour encompassing us as a shield.
