The liberal soul shall be made fat: and he that watereth shall be watered also himself.
How can a soul be fat? The word in the original translated as fat in Proverbs 11:25 means to anoint, to accept, to turn to ashes. In other words when the sacrifice was in order on the altar and pleasing to the Lord, fire fell from heaven and consumed the sacrifice. So when my sacrifice is acceptable to the Lord in any given situation, the fire of the Spirit of God will fall and fill my soul with the life, presence and love of God.
I think we become confused sometimes about the purpose of giving and sacrificing for others. Yes, others benefit when I give unto them, whether that be natural things or spiritual things, but the real recipient is me. That’s why the Bible says it’s more blessed to give than to receive. When the Lord is pleased with my sacrifice, my soul is made fat. When the Lord is pleased with my sacrifice, my soul is filled with the love, life and presence of the Spirit of God.
We see the same principle in Matthew 10:39, He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it. It is contrary to normal human thinking but we get life by giving our life away.
The liberal soul shall be made fat. The word liberal means blessing, praise of God and it means a gift, a present or a treaty of peace.
This is how we put our faith into action. This is how works are joined to faith which produces life. Our faith is joined to works when we bless the Lord and His great Name as we are handing out sacrifices of our life. On the job as we work to support our family, as we are helping some poor soul who has fallen among thieves, like the Good Samaritan did, or when we open a door for the elderly, pick up something someone has dropped and where ever we lend a helping hand with a good attitude and praising God in our heart.
Every small natural act that we perform while we praise God spiritually is an investment that will return great rewards naturally and spiritually. What a return on investment. The liberal soul shall be made fat.
Dear Father in heaven above, help us to join our faith to our works.
