The LORD also will be a refuge for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble. And they that know thy name will put their trust in thee: for thou, LORD, hast not forsaken them that seek thee.
A refuge is a strong tower and it means to be set on high. It comes from the same root word used in Proverbs 18:10, The name of the LORD is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe.
In times of trouble and when we are being oppressed, we have a refuge. You don’t have to have a certain position in the church or a lot of money to enter this refuge. Entrance into this refuge doesn’t require a certain kind of education or that you be from a particular country. The only requirement for entry into this refuge is that you know the Name of the LORD and that you put your trust in Him.
To put my trust in the Name of the LORD simply means that I understand His nature, the essence of His being and I claim that essence for myself. It means that regardless of what is happening around me, I know, understand and believe that the LORD is just, pure, holy and righteous. To put my trust in the Name of the LORD means that even when it seems as if I am going down for the last time and I will certainly drown, I still know, understand and believe that the LORD is just, pure, holy and righteous.
The LORD is a refuge for the oppressed. To be oppressed means to be crushed. A lying tongue oppresses or crushes. Proverbs 26:28, A lying tongue hateth those that are afflicted by it; and a flattering mouth worketh ruin. When someone is lying they are trying to oppress or crush something or someone. In times of oppression we have the Name of the LORD for a refuge where no lying tongue can reach us.
In times of trouble the Name of the LORD is there for a refuge. Once upon a time Jacob was in times of trouble as he fled from his brother Esau. Esau hated his brother Jacob because the birthright belonged to Jacob. If you have received Jesus into your heart and been born again, you have a spiritual birthright that causes the enemies of God to hate you. In times of trouble and oppression the Name of the LORD is a refuge. All we must do to gain entrance into that tower is put our trust in the Name of the LORD.
He has not and will not forsake them that seek Him. The Name of the LORD is a refuge!
