Song of Solomon 2:2
As the lily among thorns, so is my love among the daughters.
This is the Bridegroom speaking in this verse and He is telling the Bride where to find the Bridegroom’s love. The Bridegroom’s love is found as a lily among the thorns.
We may be numbered among the King’s Chamberlains, and yet, even in the midst of the chosen ones, as it were, His love is like a lily among the thorns. I may be in the middle of those I feel like I belong with, and yet in the middle of that, I seem to find nothing but thorns on every side. I am to be the love of God in the middle of the thorns. I am the lily God has placed in the middle of those thorns to display and model God’s love.
John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” He gave His Son to die on an old rugged cross wearing a crown of thorns and that was the greatest display of love ever.
We don’t mind being used by God to display His love as long as everybody knows how great it was that we did that and what an awesome example of God’s love we are. It can be an entirely different matter when God asks us to display His love by suffering unjustly at the hands of some human being.
God loved the world and His gift of love to the world, had to die wearing a crown of thorns. Am I willing and able to suffer rejection and be a lily in the middle of the thorns? That is a scary thought.
Once upon a time, as Moses was trekking through a wilderness place he ran into a burning thorn bush that wasn’t consumed. When he stopped to investigate this strange thing, the love of God was presented to him out of the middle of that burning bush. Moses’ reaction was to argue with that love being presented to him. Thankfully he finally woke up and implemented the love of God in his life, which he discovered in the middle of a burning thorn bush.
It is not always a pleasant thing to be a lily in the middle of the thorns but that is exactly what the God of all heaven and earth has called us to do. Help us Jesus to live your love!
