Mark 7:20
And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man.

While it is true that we must be wise as serpents and harmless as doves in our choices of relationships and with the people we associate it, allowing the Lord to lead us in those choices, we still must be usable servants of the Lord. In Matthew 10:16 Jesus said, “I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves.” He does that so that we can carry His love out to those that do not know Him.

All too many times churches become exclusive by believing that you have to see it their way, look like they do and act like they do or you can’t be a member. People work their whole life to become a member at an “exclusive” country club, live in an “exclusive” subdivision and belong to an “exclusive” church. The club that Jesus Christ belongs to is not “exclusive” it is “inclusive”. Membership is a free gift.

It’s not who we associate with or where we live that defiles us. The thing that defiles us is what comes out from within our own heart. Am I living a life of exclusivity or am I walking in God’s way of love?

Have we not seen it even in this generation? Someone living right in the middle of the most exclusive subdivision in town and belonging to the most exclusive church with a heart filled with every evil deed imaginable.

According to Ephesians 6:12 we war not against flesh and blood. The battle is inward in our own heart. Yes we will encounter opposition from without and there are those that should not be walking our streets nor sitting in places of power and authority but the real battle is in my own heart.

It is that which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man. The battle is waged and won in my own heart. After that I can be of use in God’s Kingdom.
