Isaiah 53:4-5
Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

The chastisement of our peace was upon Him. What a curious phrase. So peace comes by chastisement and that chastisement was upon the Lord. Isn’t it the dream of nearly all rational people to be able to live in peace and prosperity? Since peace comes through chastisement what is this chastisement and how does it work?

The word chastisement means many things but one thing that it means is discipline and correction. It is used in Job 12:18, “He looseth the bond of kings, and girdeth their loins with a girdle. He looseth the bond of kings means the chastisement of our peace was upon Him. The chastisement of our peace was upon Him and that loosed us from the bonds that kings had placed upon us.

That is why in Luke 4:18-19 Jesus spoke these words to those who were in the Temple, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,”

The Jewish people were looking for a deliverer who was going to set them free from the outward Roman yoke and Jesus was there to set them free from the inward yoke of religious bondage. The chastisement of our peace was upon Him. Now there certainly is nothing wrong with belonging to and attending a community of worship but when the good of the church begins to replace my relationship with and freedom in Jesus Christ I have accepted a yoke that I do not have to carry.

It is an amazing thing how many churches in today’s world want to share the love of God and welcome everyone into their community, as long as you embrace and believe in their creed and way of doing things or “you are not going where they are going” in their books.

The chastisement of our peace was upon Him. Yes that certainly means the yoke that sin has placed upon me but moreover it means the religious yoke placed upon me. It is time God’s people accept the love, life and light found in a relationship with Jesus Christ and it’s time we cast off the unfruitful works of darkness.
