John 6:66
From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him.

This event occurred at a very critical juncture in Jesus’ ministry. Jesus had just a few days before come walking on the water to the disciples on top of the stormy sea. He had invited Peter out on to the water with Him and then saved Peter when Peter was drowning.

Immediately after that Jesus had gone to the Synagogue in Capernaum and taught that He was the bread of life and if you did not eat His flesh and drink His blood you could have no part with Him. This offended many of His Disciples who then went back and walked with Him no more.

Jesus had already displayed before the disciples that He walked above the stormy sea and was not affected by it but rather could calm it and bring peace to it. And Jesus was teaching this in the synagogue knowing full well that He was getting ready to lead a group out into the fields because the established religious order was not going to accept Him.

Just after this in John 7:1 the Bible says, “After these things Jesus walked in Galilee: for he would not walk in Jewry, because the Jews sought to kill him.” Jesus no longer walked in Jerusalem which was the seat of the Jewish religious order but then took the message out into the highways and the byways. The plotting, planning and scheming to destroy Jesus and shut Him up then begins in earnest.

Are we so comfortable with today’s religious order that Jesus must go outside the church to accomplish His Father’s will? Is Jesus calling us out of the boat to walk on top of the stormy sea with Him? Are we so comfortable with today’s religious order that it offends us to think that we must eat the flesh of the Son of God and drink His blood or we will have no part with Him?

This I know, you can trust Jesus Christ! Climb out of the boat of comfort you have been riding in and follow Jesus today.
