Deuteronomy 6:17-18

Ye shall diligently keep the commandments of the LORD your God, and his testimonies, and his statutes, which he hath commanded thee. And thou shalt do that which is right and good in the sight of the LORD: that it may be well with thee, and that thou mayest go in and possess the good land which the LORD sware unto thy fathers,

What is doing right and good? We know what that is principle wise but what does that look like in everyday life on a moment by moment level. Doing right and good, principle wise, means diligently keeping the commandments of the LORD and His testimonies and statues.

On a moment by moment level as we walk through life what does doing good and right look like?

Keeping the commandments of the LORD seems an impossible thing to do. There are so many thou shalts and thou shalt nots how does a person ever get it right? While the law has not passed away and the principles contained therein are still applicable today, it has in fact been fulfilled. In Romans 8:4 the Bible says, “That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.” Jesus Christ came and fulfilled the law. I can never fulfill the law but I can walk in the Spirit of the one who did fulfill the law. If I get anything right in the law, Jesus Christ gets the credit because He fulfilled the law and I was just walking in His Spirit as He did it through me.

Walking in the Spirit is walking in the way of love. Jesus Christ walked the way of love as He traveled through life to His appointed destiny at Calvary’s Cross. He said in John 8:21, “…for I do always those things that please him.” All of the thou shalts and thou shalt nots are fulfilled by walking in God’s way of love. In Matthew 22 Jesus said plainly that all the law and prophets came down to one thing and that was love.

We don’t have to stress and try to come up with all kinds of religious acts of righteousness if we learn to just wait on the LORD in every situation and circumstance of life until He shows us what His way of love is in that particular moment and then live, exemplify and share the love of God as we are commanded to do.

We cannot live the law but we can share the love of God and do unto others as we would have them do unto us.
