Isaiah 29:13-14

Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men: Therefore, behold, I will proceed to do a marvellous work among this people, even a marvellous work and a wonder: for the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the understanding of their prudent men shall be hid.

As a wise person once rightly said, “I can’t hear what you’re saying because your actions are so loud,” we likewise can say all sorts of wise religious sounding things with our mouth. However the Lord’s accusation against His people was that they drew near Him with their mouth and honoured Him with their lips but their heart was far removed from Him by their own choice. Dressed up and looking all religious on the outside and a heart full of everything imaginable except love, respect and obedience to the Lord.

The accusation was that awe, respect, reverence and fear of the Lord was taught by precept of man and God’s people did not have it in their heart because of their experience with the Lord.

Often, in today’s world, fear of God is taught by man in order that man might control God’s people for their own benefit. When that is the case things will eventually implode and fall apart. We have seen that lesson many times in history with different societies.

I’m convinced that when people discover how much the Lord really loves them and they understand the price He paid to buy back what was already His, their heart will be filled with such fear, respect and awe for the Lord that it will be totally unnecessary to attempt to control anything.

Totally controlled? Yes, by our love for the King of kings and the LORD of lords, even the LORD Jesus Christ.
