I know thy works: behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it: for thou hast a little strength, and hast kept my word, and hast not denied my name.
This passage of scripture was written to the church in Philadelphia. The word Philadelphia means brotherly love. It’s not hard to love our brother when they think we are awesome and they are telling everyone how we saved their life and how great we are. It’s quite a different story when we are trying to love someone who everyone else has given up on and feels like we too should give up on them and put them out of the church.
The Spirit said to the church at Philadelphia I know your works, you have a little strength. A little strength is all it takes to keep His Word and not deny His Name. He said if we have faith as the grain of a mustard seed we can move mountains and if we have a little strength we can keep His Word and not deny His Name. 1 John 4:8 says that God is love. Therefore since God is love, His Name and His Word is a Name and Word of love. That is why we are commanded to speak the truth, “in love”.
It seems such an impossible task sometimes to love our neighbor as ourselves and especially if they are unlovely. In reality all it takes is a little strength, all it takes is faith as the grain of a mustard seed. It doesn’t mean we are going to be experiencing great euphoric feelings of spiritual love. It just means that with the little strength we have left we don’t deny the Lord’s Name and we choose to keep His Word which is to love our neighbor as ourselves. In other words we do unto others as we would have others do unto us.
How beautiful is that? All it takes is a little strength.
