Isaiah 29:13

Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men:

It is two distinct and separate things to possess a healthy and right fear of God, which means respect, awe and love for the Lord versus a fear toward the Lord that is taught by man and is used to control people from a position of authority over them.

Deuteronomy 6:2 teaches us to fear the Lord. “That thou mightest fear the LORD thy God, to keep all his statutes and his commandments, which I command thee, thou, and thy son, and thy son’s son, all the days of thy life; and that thy days may be prolonged.” This is the right kind of fear and it is a fear that causes us to respect, reverence and obey the Lord because we love Him so much. It is like when one loves their spouse. If you truly love your spouse as you should, you will never cheat on them with another because you don’t want to cause your spouse pain. When you love someone you do everything you can to keep from causing them pain and to bear their pain for them if you can.

It is the same way in our spiritual relationship with Jesus Christ. When we learn to truly love Him with all our heart, soul and might we just naturally do our best to not cause Him pain but rather bring joy to His heart because we love Him.

That is an entirely different thing than the fear “toward” God that is taught in many places in today’s world. In today’s world, many times, people are taught that if you don’t act right, come under and be obedient then this big powerful God sitting on the throne in heaven will get you and whip you. Of course the fear taught towards God by men, is for the purpose of controlling others and is distinctly different from teaching people to love God and thereby they fall in love with their owner and creator and fear God with the love, respect, reverence and awe that He deserves.

Let us teach people to love God with our words and moreover with our actions instead of teaching them to have fear towards God. “Fear towards God” is completely different than “fear of God” that comes from love.
