1 Corinthians 13:13

And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.

Charity is the Greek word agape which is also translated as love a total of 86 times in the New Testament. True love in its highest form is abiding love.

Abiding love is the kind of love that stays or abides in the good times and the bad. True love in a marriage is abiding love. It is love that chooses to abide and stay when things are good and it also stays and abides when times are rough. Abiding love is not a feeling but rather it is a choice. It is easy to love when the romantic feelings are flowing but it takes abiding love to choose to remain and face the rough places together. There seems to be little abiding love left in today’s world.

Jesus displayed abiding love for the Heavenly Father and for us when He willingly submitted to the humiliation, suffering and death of the cross. He remained loyal and faithful even unto death fulfilling the law, namely, “And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself.” Luke 10:27

Even the Church seems to come up short in abiding love. They claim to be all about love but all too often that really means as long as you look like us, believe like us and pay your “tithes” to us. It is commonly justified by, we are only speaking the truth in love. I don’t remember any of that being displayed at Calvary. Jesus suffered and died for everyone. Abiding love is for everyone regardless of the color of their skin, which political party they belong to, no matter how much money they have or do not have and regardless of which religious organization they belong to. Abiding love even encompasses those of a different sexual orientation than me.

Do you wish you had more influence in someone’s life? Then wrap them in abiding love until they realize that you are going to be there in the good times and in the bad times. When someone understands that you really love them with abiding love then they want to hear what you have to say.
