1 Peter 3:13-15

And who is he that will harm you, if ye be followers of that which is good? But and if ye suffer for righteousness’ sake, happy are ye: and be not afraid of their terror, neither be troubled; But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:

The New Living Translation Bible says it this way, “But even if you suffer for doing what is right, God will reward you for it. So don’t worry or be afraid of their threats.”

It seems there is always someone ready to quickly pass judgment on our actions. When they judge our actions it makes them a judge of the law and not a doer of the law. A doer of the law is someone who fulfills the law by loving the LORD with all their being and then loving their neighbor as themselves. Galatians 5:14, “For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.” It may be concluded then that when I am judging whether or not someone is doing what the law says they must do I am judging the law and not fulfilling the law, namely loving.

Of course when I decide to live my life loving others instead, of judging, there will always be someone ready to persecute me and speak evil of me. You hear the accusations. You can’t have anything to do with them because they left our group. Or, they are going to suffer judgment because they don’t believe like we do. Then the threats are there also. If you try to help that person I will leave or I will tell the church what you did. Amazingly enough in today’s world, there are even those who would threaten to sue you to keep you from exercising your freedom of speech.

I don’t remember Jesus trying to shut anyone up or threatening anyone. Even at His public trial and sentencing He let each person present make their own decision. Instead of defending Himself, Jesus proclaimed you have no power over me other than what my Father has given you.

Don’t be afraid of their threats and their terror. Do what is right and watch the LORD God of all heaven and earth reward you. Be a doer of the law, walking in the love of Christ and the love of Christ shall surround you and protect you even when the terror and threats are coming.
