Matthew 5:41-42

And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain. Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.

It’s the second mile that proves that Christ is the head over and the head of all things in your life. It proves it both to yourself and to the other person involved. Our humanity will go the first mile with someone in hopes of being rewarded but Christ really has to be our head in order for us to go the second mile with someone.

This was what Abraham did when he took his son Isaac to sacrifice him as he had been commanded to do by God. When we realize God is requiring something of us it’s fairly easy to say yes Lord I will go and maybe even start out on the journey. However we must really have a relationship with the Lord when it comes time to lay down the thing we cherish so much and sacrifice it to the Lord.

There were two sons in Matthew the twenty first chapter whose father asked them to go work in his vineyard. One son answered, yes I will go and never did. The second son said no I will not but then repented and went. It was the second son who accomplished the will of God.

It is one thing to walk the first mile with someone and something entirely different to go the second mile with them when we feel like they should be able to walk by themselves at this point.

Did not the LORD of all heaven and earth do this very thing for us? We were His to start with because it was He who created us. He were His property to begin with. Yet He went the second mile and paid a ransom for what was already His when He sent His only begotten Son to die on Calvary’s cross.

So many times we struggle to make it even the first mile. Lord please strengthen us and help us to go the second mile as you did for us.
