Proverbs 23:17

Let not thine heart envy sinners: but be thou in the fear of the LORD all the day long.

Do not let your heart envy sinners and what they have but be content with and grateful for whatever provision God has made for you and set your heart on seeking the LORD’s wisdom. Proverbs 4:7 says, “Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.” Wisdom is the principle thing or the beginning thing. It is the same word used in Genesis 1:1, In the beginning (or in the principle) God created the heaven and the earth. So in the middle of chaos and out of nothingness God used wisdom to create the heaven and the earth.

It was in wisdom or in the principle thing that God created the heaven and the earth. The LORD God is able to create something out of nothing in the middle of chaos because of His wisdom. In Proverbs 3:19 the bible says exactly that very thing, “The LORD by wisdom hath founded the earth; by understanding hath he established the heavens.”

Let not thine heart envy sinners. To envy, as it’s used here, means to desire someone or something so much that it provokes anger to the point that a person is red in the face. Jacob’s wife Rachel suffered from this type of envy in Genesis 30:1 when she said, “And when Rachel saw that she bare Jacob no children, Rachel envied her sister; and said unto Jacob, Give me children, or else I die.”

Envy not sinners and what they have because envy brings death but seek the wisdom of God as it is the principle thing and is the very thing God uses to create something out of nothing in the middle of chaos.
