For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.
Did you ever wonder if the Lord loves you or not? We know theoretically in our mind that He does but emotionally, in our heart, it doesn’t always feel that way, if we are honest. However we never have to doubt if we are loved by the Lord if we experience His chastening at times in our journey. Contrary to our emotions, chastening is a certain sign that the Lord loves us and not that He is trying to destroy us. The issue is that, as human beings, we judge the Lord’s actions and feelings based on the way we feel as human beings when we are forced to chasten someone we are responsible for. When the Lord chastens us He doesn’t feel angry and out of control as we human beings sometimes do but rather He feels His love for us. It’s a love that takes some maturity and growth to understand.
Chastening means to train children, to be instructed or taught, to cause one to learn. The chastening we receive from the Lord is not punitive or meant to get even with us, it is meant to teach and train us and cause us to learn. Look at what Jesus endured, suffering even the death of crucifixion because of His love for the Heavenly Father and for us. What a reward awaited Jesus, even a seat on the right hand of God the Father.
We have not yet resisted unto death, as our Lord did. We may rest assured that if we accept the Lord’s chastening with a right spirit and allow it to bring forth fruits of righteousness in our life then we are truly children of God and will most assuredly receive our inheritance as guaranteed by covenant from eternity past. Bless the Name of Jesus!
