Help, LORD; for the godly man ceaseth; for the faithful fail from among the children of men. They speak vanity every one with his neighbour: with flattering lips and with a double heart do they speak.
The Psalmist was lamenting or mourning the lack of truth and honesty that he was experiencing among those around him. He felt like that whatever he was hearing was coming from a double heart that was spewing flattery in order to score points with him when in reality the words were all empty or vanity.
Isn’t that a fitting summation of where we live in today’s world. Who do you believe?
The Psalmist goes on to say further down in the Psalm, “The LORD shall cut off all flattering lips” and “For the oppression of the poor, for the sighing of the needy, now will I arise, saith the LORD; I will set him in safety from him that puffeth at him.” So although there are so many empty words spoken from double hearts in today’s world we can place our trust and faith in the LORD God as it is He whom ordains the powers that be. As the Bible says in Romans 13:1, “Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.”
We may rest in peace and confidence, fully assured that while the majority of human words we hear will be vanity, yet He who sits on the Throne of Heaven is still in control and will cut off and expose those who would think to do His children harm.
