1 Corinthians 12:29-31
Are all apostles? are all prophets? are all teachers? are all workers of miracles? Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret? But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way.
The great Apostle Paul explained diversity of gifts to the Corinthian church and how that we were still to be one even though we all have different gifts and he told them it was okay to desire the best gifts. He finishes that discourse though with the statement, “And yet shew I unto you a more excellent way.” Paul then launches into the great discourse on love that we see as 1 Corinthians 13 in the King James Bible.
So we can have all these marvelous gifts of the Spirit of God and yet if we don’t have love, “I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.” Or just a lot of noise. What is the more excellent way Paul shows us? It is the way of love.
Love suffereth long, and is kind; love envieth not; love vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things. love never faileth.
So we can have and give all kinds of gifts to one another but the greatest thing we can have and give is love. There is a more excellent way and that is the way of love. What is God’s way of love in the circumstances you find yourself in today?
Paul talked about walking that more excellent way in 2 Corinthians 4:17-18 when he said, “For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory; While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.” A far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory is the love of God. God is clothed in His glory which emanates from His own self. God is love and walking in God, walking in His love is a more excellent way than only walking in His gifts, as great and beautiful as they are.
LORD please show me how to walk in your way of love today!
