Afterward he appeared unto the eleven as they sat at meat, and upbraided them with their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they believed not them which had seen him after he was risen.
Hardness of heart is a lack of spiritual perception. If we truly possess a spiritual perception of who Jesus is we have no problem believing. The disciples had a problem believing that Jesus had appeared to the two who were on the road to Emmaus because they lacked the spiritual understanding that Jesus would be raised from the dead even though Jesus had told them that He would be raised on more than one occasion during His time with them. I can imagine that the disciples were also having trouble believing that Jesus had appeared to these other two instead of them. After all they were the disciples who Jesus had personally chosen.
It seems to be the attitude of much of the spiritual leadership in today’s world also. You don’t have to listen long before you will hear something along the lines of, “Well I am the pastor, if that’s true why didn’t the Lord tell me.”
The disciples were still having issues believing exactly who Jesus was. Thus Jesus says to them in Mark 16:17-18, “And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.”
Jesus is so much more than what we see and understand. This same Jesus who came to earth and lived as a man, was crucified and died, was buried, spent three days and nights in hell paying the price for my redemption, was raised from the dead and then ascended into heaven is big enough to save me from today’s situations and circumstances. Only believe for with God all things are possible.
