1 Peter 1:22-23
Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently: Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.
See that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently. So if we are being warned to love one another with a pure heart fervently it means that there is a danger that we can love one another with an impure heart or in other words with a wrong motive.
It is hard to imagine and difficult to believe but we certainly are capable of loving one another with an impure heart for our own ulterior motives and selfish reasons. We can feign love for the purpose of making ourselves appear spiritual and superior to others, we can feign love for the purpose of causing our church to have more members than the other churches and we can even feign love for the purpose of being able to influence others for our own gain.
In John 13:34 the Bible says, “A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.” A new commandment was given to us by Jesus Himself when He walked this earth. We are not to just love our neighbor as ourselves but we are to love one another as Jesus loved us. How did Jesus love us? Jesus loved us unconditionally, not so that He could gain from us but so that we could gain from Him. Does it make Jesus any better or gain Him anything if I love Him? No, of course not. He is just as holy, pure and righteous after I love Him as we was before I loved Him. However, I am a better person and I am changed by His love when I love Him.
Sadly there is plenty of feigned love in the church and in Christians today. We have been born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God. Let us water that seed, remove the weeds of greed and self exaltation from around it and shine the sunlight of God’s love on it that we might love one another with a pure heart and unfeigned love.
“By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.” John 13:35
