Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen; and ye receive not our witness. If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things?
Jesus was speaking with Nicodemus in this passage of scripture. Nicodemus, whose name means conqueror, had come to Jesus by night because he had witnessed the miracles and works that Jesus had done. Nicodemus understood that Jesus was a teacher come from God because of the miracles Jesus had performed. However, Nicodemus’ understanding was still lacking when it came to the fact that Jesus is the only Begotten Son of God.
What Nicodemus saw happen wasn’t enough. He wanted to question Jesus about who Jesus was.
How often in our life have we taken the same position with Jesus? After all the difficult situations Jesus has brought us through in life, which has been nothing short of a miracle in mine, His Word should be enough for us.
He said in His Word, “I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. Thou shalt have no other gods before me.” Yet we often look to money, a relationship with some human being or possessions as the thing we need to bring happiness and a sense of completeness into our world.
Jesus is enough. He loves us and died a death of crucifixion that we may spend eternity with Him. May God Almighty help us to embrace His sufficiency in this world.
