John 9:4
I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work.
What is the works that we were sent to do? Our work is simply to be obedient to the one that sent us. 1 Samuel 15:22 teaches us that obedience is better than sacrifice. “And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.” There is nothing any more precious in the LORD’s sight than an obedient soul.
Many in today’s religious world would have you to believe that means that you must be in subjection to them and live by all the edicts they issue with the threat that you can’t be as spiritual as they are unless you are in subjection to them.
The one we owe our obedience to and the one we are to be in subjection to is the one that sent us. Obeying the one that sent us will cause conflict. It always has and always will as displayed in the life of Jesus Christ as He walked this earth. His journey would have been much easier had He simply come under the religious order of the day and worked the works they wished rather than doing as His Father directed. The problem with that is that we would not have the salvation today that our soul so desperately needs.
Obedience is better than sacrifice. There is nothing wrong with sacrifice but obedience to the one that sent us is a much better route that results in far greater and eternal works than does sacrifice in and of itself.
Who sent you? There is where your obligation of obedience lies.
