As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent. Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.
Each of the seven churches had their own particular set of issues and the Lord addressed each church in its individuality without comparing it to the other churches and yet there was one thing specifically that He said to all seven of the churches. “He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches”.
The Lord never says something frivolously just to have something to say. If He says something you can believe that we will see that thing around the corner. For example He told Noah to build a boat and sure enough there came a flood.
Adam and his wife were instructed to dress and keep the garden and not to eat of the Tree of Knowledge and sure enough the serpent managed to find entrance into the Garden and lead them into eating from the Tree of Knowledge.
If the Lord is telling the churches, if you have ears you better use them and hear what the Spirit is saying, then it’s because the Church’s issue is in not hearing what the Spirit says to it.
It’s an awesome eternal privilege and joy unspeakable to be a part of God’s church but the thing we have to watch for, as the church, is the spiritual pride that sneaks in and stops the ear so that we can not hear what the Spirit is saying to the church. Psalm 58:4 says, “Their poison is like the poison of a serpent: they are like the deaf adder that stoppeth her ear;”.
Spiritual pride is a serpent that causes us to have ears that don’t hear what the Spirit says. Regardless of what church age or dispensation we are in personally in our walk with the Lord and regardless of the sign out in front our church home, the issue we Christians must watch for is spiritual pride. When we have experienced God’s love through the gift of His only Begotten Son, Jesus Christ, we begin to unconsciously feel like we are something and then we begin to judge and unconsciously look down our nose at those who have not accepted Jesus Christ and at those in other churches.
Let us beware today. The Lord said to all seven churches. “He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches”. The first sign that I am susceptible to spiritual pride and to missing what the Spirit of God is saying to me is that I am a part of the Body of Christ.
Jesus please open our ears this day to hear what the Spirit is saying to the church.
